Overview of Idea

Transform at-risk 16 -24 year olds in the most underserved neighborhoods of San Francisco and Oakland, CA, into tomorrow's social entrepreneurs. Ready, Set, Connect equips youth with web design, social media and leadership skills to help small businesses thrive and revitalize their communities.

The Specifics: How will you use $2,500 to fuel social change through technology?

San Francisco and Oakland sit in the epicenter of technology, while many communities within these cities are being left behind in tech education and adoption. Oakland’s unemployment rate is 16.5%; 4% higher than the state’s 12.1%. In response, Ready, Set, Connect will train 100 youth in web design, Google Apps and social media skills to create strategic marketing plans to help local businesses become more discoverable online. This will increase revenue for small businesses and create job opportunities for youth. Youth will compile their completed projects into a digital resume with Prezi. GOOD funds will be used to recruit youth and pay stipends, market program to businesses, secure Flavors.me and Weebly accounts, and to build a website.
